Seamonson looking to take Atholton back to playoffs

At first glance it might appear that first-year head coach Kyle Schmitt has his work cut out for him taking over an Atholton (Columbia, Md.) team that finished 3-7 last season.

Kalvin Seamonson accounted for four touchdowns in the win over Wilde Lake.

But Schmitt inherits some solid offensive weapons, including quarterback Kalvin Seamonson.

"I watched a lot of tape from last year. … It is a luxury having those kinds of guys [Seamonson and receiver Matt Robinson] coming back," Schmitt said. "I'm the kind of guy that likes to run, but I'm building our team around what we have."

The 6-foot, 170-pound Seamonson, who played both quarterback and safety last season, threw for 504 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 306 yards and five touchdowns. One of his best games came in a 22-21 loss to eventual Class 3A state runner-up Wilde Lake (Columbia, Md.).

In the Oct. 3 game against Wilde Lake, Seamonson threw for 83 yards and accounted for one passing and one rushing touchdown.

The Howard County coaches selected Seamonson as a second-team All-County defensive back after he recorded 30 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

"I mentioned to him the possibility of only being a quarterback this year," Schmitt said. "He's not going to let that happen. He was pretty adamant about playing defense. I'm OK with that. You want to keep him healthy, but Kalvin is just a player … he makes things happen."

Seamonson, a junior, has two primary targets returning from last season: Robinson, who holds offers from James Madison and Fordham, and junior Ryan Raines.

Schmitt was able to get a first-hand look at his future quarterback during last month's NFL High School Player Development (HSPD) camp at Wilde Lake.

"The little I got to see him last week and seeing him move around has been awesome," Schmitt said. "Kalvin is a coach's son-type guy that every coach loves to have."

Seamonson has received college attention mostly from Division I-AA colleges. According to Schmitt, colleges are recruiting Seamonson as an athlete … some like him as a quarterback, while others have requested to see his defensive back film.
