South Carolina's John McKissick is the all-time national leader for career wins, but every state in the land has a legendary coach.
The following list is of the winningest active coach in each state. Some of the coaches listed below are on the verge of a milestone while at least two -- Bob Ladouceur in California and Robert Paroli in North Carolina -- are about to set state records.
ALABAMA
Waldon Tucker (Fayette County, Fayette). The state's winningest active coach has 290 victories. He's been at Fayette County for 27 of his 36 seasons.
ALASKA
Rod Christiansen (Palmer). He has 105-61 record over the last 18 seasons.
ARIZONA
Jesse Parker (Gilbert). He won his 309th game last October to break the state record. He recently resigned at Gilbert, but has not retired and would still be considered an active coach.
ARKANSAS
Bernie Cox (Little Rock Central). The state's winningest active coach has 230 wins and seven state titles since 1975.
CALIFORNIA
Bob Ladouceur (De La Salle, Concord). He needs one more win to become No. 1 on the all-time state wins list. His total of 344 starts the year in a tie with St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs) head coach Marijon Ancich, who is coming out of retirement this season. Ladouceur's teams set the national record with 151 consecutive wins between 1992-2004.
COLORADO
Ken Soper (Dolores County, Dove Creek). He pushed his career win total last season to 289 since 1965. Soper was inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001.
CONNECTICUT
Ed McCarthy (West Haven). The state's winningest active coach is entering his 39th season in 2009, including the last 27 at West Haven. He has 288 career victories.
DELAWARE
Butch Simpson (Newark). He holds the state record for career wins with 235. This year's team is hoping to improve upon a 6-5 record from last season.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (D.C.)
Craig Jefferies (Dunbar). He's the architect of a program with eight district titles in the last 11 years.
FLORIDA
Charles "Corky" Rogers (The Bolles School, Jacksonville). Florida's all-time winningest coach has won 84 percent of his games with more than 370 wins. Rogers also has led Bolles to eight of its nine state championships.
GEORGIA
Larry Campbell (Lincoln County, Lincolnton). The National High School Hall of Famer is the all-time winningest coach in the state with 424 wins. Campbell also is third best on the all-time national chart.
HAWAII
Ron Marcial (Honoka'a). The two-decade mentor for the Dragons has more than 130 victories.
IDAHO
Tom Harrison (Pocatello). He has won three state titles at Pocatello and earlier won seven at Snake River. At Snake River, Harrison also had a state record 54-game winning streak.
ILLINOIS
Frank Lenti (Mt. Carmel, Chicago). With Gary Korhonen at Richards of Oak Lawn retiring after last season, Lenti and his state record nine state titles moves to the top of the list. He also has passed the 275-game win total. It needs to be mentioned, though, that Lenti, in his 26th season at Mt. Carmel, will serve a two-game suspension at the start of this season due to what the Illinois High School Association has determined were "violations of recruiting by-laws."
INDIANA
Larry "Bud" Wright (Sheridan). He guided Sheridan to its ninth state Class A title last season and has state record 350 wins since 1964.
IOWA
Dick Tighe (St. Edmond's, Fort Dodge). A coach since 1954, he has amassed a win total of 370, which is a state record.
KANSAS
C.J. Hamilton (Silver Lake). The state's winningest active coach is approaching the 300-win plateau after a 13-1 record, and a state title season last year.
KENTUCKY
Bob Schneider (Newport Central Catholic, Newport). A coach since 1966, he is the all-time winningest Bluegrass State mentor with more than 330 victories.
LOUISIANA
J.T. Curtis (John Curtis Christian, River Ridge). The second all-time winningest coach in the nation, behind only South Carolina's John McKissick, Curtis has won 467 games and 89 percent of his games since 1969. Under his guidance, the Patriots also have captured 23 state crowns in multiple classes.
MAINE
John Wolfgram (Cheverus, Portland). He has won more than 250 games, most of those at former school South Portland.
MARYLAND
Bob Milloy (Good Counsel, Olney). After coaching two public schools to eight state titles in 18 seasons, Milloy moved to the private school ranks to guide an up-and-coming state power. He is the state's all-time winningest coach at 332-103-1.
MASSACHUSETTS
Bill Tighe (Lexington). Tighe, who is 84, is expected to return this fall for his 34th season at Lexington. He has compiled 254 wins during his coaching tenure, which spans three schools.
MICHIGAN
Al Fracassa (Brother Rice, Bloomfield Hills). A coach since 1960, the state's all-time winningest coach reached 380 wins last season.
MINNESOTA
Ron Stolski (Brainerd). The state's all-time winningest coach passed the 300-win mark in 2007 and has been on the sidelines since 1962.
MISSISSIPPI
Jim Drewery (Booneville). The state's winningest active coach has 330 victories heading into the 2009 season.
MISSOURI
Bob Shore (Camdenton). Since 1966, Shore's teams have won 350 games in the Show Me State. Shore's teams have gone 8-2 and 7-3 the last two seasons.
MONTANA
Jack Johnson (C.M. Russell, Great Falls). He has won more than 300 games since 1973 and once had a quarterback named Ryan Leaf.
NEBRASKA
Tom Jaworski (Creighton Prep, Omaha). The state's all-time winningest mentor has captured 325 victories since 1972.
NEVADA
Ken Dalton (McQueen, Reno). His team won the Class 4A state title last fall and he is the state's winningest coach.
NEW HAMPSHIRE
Charles Lenahan (Plymouth Regional). He earned his 300th career victory last September. Lenahan's team is a favorite this year to win a Division 4 state title.
NEW JERSEY
Victor Paternostro (Pope John XXIII, Sparta). He has been the head coach at his school since 1968. He won his 300th game seven years ago.
NEW YORK
Howie Vogts (Bethpage). The state's all-time winningest coach remains active and has amassed over 350 victories since 1953.
NEW MEXICO
Eric Roanhaus (Clovis). In 31 seasons, he has guided this annual state contender to nearly 300 victories.
NORTH CAROLINA
Robert Paroli (71st, Fayetteville). One more win and this 51-year coach will be the state's all-time winningest after he guided his team to a state Class 4A title last year and his 380th career victory.
NORTH DAKOTA
Fred Fridley (Watford City). He guided his ninth state title team, in Class 11AA, last season and leads active coaches with more than 280 wins.
OHIO
Bob Lutz (Ironton). He took a year off from coaching in 2006 but returned and has 350 wins since 1970 while winning 81 percent of his games.
OKLAHOMA
Mike Snyder (Seminole). The three-decade coach has guided Seminole to over 270 victories, which is best among active coaches in the state.
OREGON
Thurman Bell (Roseburg). He has won four state titles and nearly 300 games in 38 seasons and counting.
PENNSYLVANIA
Jim Render (Upper St. Clair, Pittsburgh). He reached the 300-victory career mark in 2008 and is the winningest active coach in the Keystone State.
RHODE ISLAND
Bob Murray (Tiverton). The winningest active state coach has surpassed 160 career victories.
SOUTH CAROLINA
John McKissick (Summerville). The nation's all-time winningest high school football coach has been on the sidelines since 1956 and has amassed 565 wins and 10 state championships.
SOUTH DAKOTA
Steve Kueter (O'Gorman, Sioux Falls). Recent retirements have enabled Kueter to become the winningest active coach in the state with a record of 237-65-1 heading into this season.
TENNESSEE
Ken Netherland (St. Georges, Collierville). A Memphis area coach since 1966, including a long tenure at Germantown, he leads active coaches in the state with more than 340 victories.
TEXAS
Phil Danaher (Calallen, Corpus Christi). A coach since 1974, he's the state's winningest active mentor, and third all-time, while nearing 350 career victories.
UTAH
Roger DuPaix (Skyline, Salt Lake City). He owns 281 wins in 33 seasons, including a streak of winning five straight state titles during the 1990s.
VERMONT
Jim McLaughlin (Union, Woodstock). The state's winningest active mentor is closing in on 250 career victories.
VIRGINIA
Mike Smith (Hampton). One of only seven all-time coaches to win 400 games, he reached the plateau in 2008. A Crabbers' coach since 1971, he also has guided 12 state title teams.
WEST VIRGINIA
Denny Price (Musselman, Inwood). The state's winningest active coach has also won more games at one school than any other in Mountain State history. He could reach 250 wins this season.
WASHINGTON
Sid Otton (Tumwater). A coach since 1968, he became the state's first to reach 300 victories in 2007.
WISCONSIN
Bob Hyland (St. Mary's Springs, Fond du Lac). He has amassed over 330 wins since 1971 and was the first coach in Wisconsin history to win 300 games.
WYOMING
Todd Dayton (Cokeville). He's coming up on his 29th season and has more than 225 wins.
