It's easy to point to Bellevue (Wash.)'s 2004 victory over De La Salle of Concord, Calif., as the most historical football game played between a Washington high school and a California high school. After all, the Wolverines snapped De La Salle's national-record win streak at 151 games with a 39-20 triumph.

But that's not the only significant victory by a Washington school over a California school. Way back in 1920, in only the third reported contest between schools from the two states, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly was cruising along with a 7-0 record and had outscored its opponents 438-0. That's an average of 62.6 points per game and includes a 113-0 win in its first game. The Jackrabbits then took on Everett (Wash.) High and were soundly beaten 28-0. The Seagulls then went on to win the unofficial national championship with a 16-7 victory over East Tech of Cleveland.

Given those results, if Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, Calif., can get past two-time defending Class 4A state champ Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.) Friday (ESPNU, 10 p.m. ET), the Lions will be able to say they've earned the most important win by a California team over a Washington team.

Skyline and Oaks Christian are not the only Washington and California schools facing off this weekend. Although that matchup pits two state-ranked No. 1 teams, the other showdown involves California No. 3 Grant of Sacramento (No. 30 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50) against Washington No. 2 Bellevue (No. 45 in the FAB 50). That game will be Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Seattle as part of the four-game Nike CBA Football Classic.

Two of the other games in the Classic also will feature California schools versus Washington schools. Miramonte (Orinda, Calif.) will take on Glacier Peak (Snohomish, Wash.), and Foothill (Palo Cedro, Calif.) will meet Union (Vancouver, Wash.).

Bellevue, which also beat Long Beach Poly in 2005 and is 3-0 all time against California schools, will face Grant after losing 35-17 to Katy (Texas) on Friday. The Wolverines were hoping they could say they had beaten state champs from Texas and California on back-to-back weekends, but now they will have to be happy with just beating another high-profile California program.

Grant will play its first game against a Washington school, but last season the Pacers played and defeated two eventual state champions. They first downed Highland of Pocatello, Idaho, 34-21, and later beat Alta (Utah) 35-28.
