Game of the Week: Good Counsel vs. DeMatha at PG Sports & Learning Center, Friday 7 p.m.
Every week, MDVarsity.com will update scores from games throughout the state. Here are each week's results.
Best Matchup: Thomas Johnson at Urbana, Friday 7 p.m.
This long-standing rivalry is one of the better games in Maryland. Both TJ and Urbana have rich football histories and this year it gets even better with both teams playing for playoff spots in Class 4A North. Thomas Johnson has been as good as expected this season, boasting a backfield of future Division I-A players, Nick Forbes (California) and Jeremy Grove (East Carolina), but it has been the play of Ryon Lynch whose dual-threat at quarterback along with receiver Marquis Woodyard has been the perfect big-play compliment to Forbes and Grove. Urbana has surpassed the preseason predictions. After not filling its head coaching void until June and the loss of most of its offensive starters, expectations were low for a traditional power program. Urbana won last year, 15-7 to break a two-game losing streak to the Patriots. Urbana has a kung-fu grip on the No. 1 seed in 4A North, eight points ahead of Thomas Johnson. A win for either team will mean a huge bonus point win.
Most Important: Quince Orchard at Clarksburg, Friday 6:30 p.m.
This game has a bit of that new car smell to it. Both Quince Orchard and Clarksburg are new to 3A West this season and they have never played each other. Quince Orchard has played in 4A the last few years, winning the 2007 state title and Clarksburg moved up from 2A, a division in which they had not lost a regular season game in two years. Quince Orchard has only lost on regular season game in its past 25 - to Sherwood last year. Clarksburg has not lost a regular season game in its last 35. Quince Orchard is in first in 3A West with 47 points and Clarksburg is not far behind with 45 points - tied with Linganore for second. With three teams at 5-0, followed by a 4-1 Tuscarora team and four others at 3-2, every game in 3A West is big. The winner of this game could likely be a favorite to challenge Linganore as the team to beat in 3A this year.
Star Power: Suitland at Flowers, Saturday 2 p.m.
If you are a college in need of a running back, this is the game to go to on Saturday afternoon - it's only a 10-minute drive from where DeMatha and Good Counsel will play on Friday. Kevin Williams has led Suitland in rushing in three of the Rams five games, but Suitland is anything but a one-horse team. Anthony Norman led the ground game against High Point and Keith Brown led the team in rushing against Wise. The three have combined to rush for 840 yards this season. For Flowers, Reginald Woods has been a stud. The senior has rushed for 775 yards and seven touchdowns this season - rushing for at least 162 yards in every game except a blowout win over Northwestern-PG in Week 1. John Clark has been a solid compliment to Woods in head coach Mike Mayo's multiple running back attack. Clark has rushed for 380 yards, leading the team with 193 yards and two touchdowns last week against Laurel.
