Game of the week: Gwynn Park (6-0) at Douglass-PG (6-0)

This is a big week in Class 2A South, but no game may be bigger than
Gwynn Park at Douglass-PG. Last year Douglass got the better of Gwynn
Park – winning 26-12 and once again these two teams are loaded. Gwynn
Park is led by Khalek Shepherd who has rushed for at least 100 yards in
every game – accumulating 800 yards and 12 touchdowns. For Douglass,
their engine is quarterback Richard Barber. The senior has thrown for
736 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for another 526 and seven more
scores this season. Douglass is holding on to the first place spot in 2A

South, but only seven points separates first from the seventh place
team, Patuxent. Gwynn Park is the only other 6-0 team in 2A South, but
they sit in third place behind Southern-AA. Glenelg, McDonough and
Patuxent are all making bids to make the playoffs this season, but only
four will go – making this game an important point pickup for both the
Yellow Jackets and Eagles.

Most Important: Damascus (4-2) at Sherwood (6-0)

To say every week is a must win week for Damascus may either be an
overstatement or entirely accurate. The Hornets are 4-2, but are one of
three teams with that record sitting outside of the Class 3A West
playoffs. A win over Sherwood would mean eight points for a win over a
4A team and with Sherwood likely, at least eight bonus points. IN a 3A
West battle that looks to be decided by very few points, every one
counts. For Sherwood, this week begins a four-game stretch of tough
games. Damascus, Churchill, Springbrook and Quince Orchard are all vying
to make the playoffs and with two of those teams (Churchill,
Springbrook) just behind them in 4A West, it could mean home field
advantage in the regional playoffs.

Best Matchup: Atholton (6-0) at Long Reach (5-1)

Atholton already has a big win over Wilde Lake this season and as long
as the Raiders do not completely collapse, they appear to be a lock to
make the playoffs in 3A East this season. For Long Reach, even a two
loss season could keep them out of the playoffs in a loaded 2A South.
With seven teams sitting at 4-2 or better, the Lightning are holding on
to the fourth spot by one point. Long Reach has solid running backs in
Adam Reed and Kwasi Sarpong who both rushed for more than 100 yards last
week against Reservoir. Atholton has a potent aerial attack with Kalvin
Seamonson (907 yards, 10 TD's) throwing to Matt Robinson (530 yards).

Star Power: Loyola at Gilman

While both of these teams lost last week – probably keeping this from
being the game of the week – it does not take away from the talent that
will line up. Loyola has one of the better quarterbacks in Maryland with
Connor Bruns. Gilman boasts the most dynamic player in the state with
Darius Jennings. Gilman has Jim Poggi and Anthony Ferguson headed to
Iowa and Loyola has a host of young players as they try to rebound from
a 21-0 loss to McDonogh from last week.
