Boys' Athlete of the Year

Rowlett / Track & Field
The No. 1 athlete in the ESPNU DyeStat senior recruit rankings, Goodwin will go
down as one of the nation's best-ever prep track and field athletes. He became
the first American in 16 years to claim a world junior long jump title when he
soared 25 feet, 4.75 inches at the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships in
Poland. Goodwin won the long jump and triple jump at the this spring's Texas
Relays, and he will continue his track career at Texas, where he'll also play wide
receiver for the football team.

Waxahachie / Baseball
Cain, a senior, was in the zone on the diamond this spring. The 6-3, 225-pound
MLB prospect reached double digits in home runs by the end of the regular
season and also struck out 103 batters in his first 47 innings on the hill.

Highland Park / Golf
With second-place finishes at the Junior PGA and the British Junior in the past
12 months (among many other impressive results), Spieth has claimed the No.
1 spot in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings -- and he's only a sophomore.

Jesuit / Swimming
Thompson claimed his fourth Class 5A state title in the 100 backstroke this winter,
setting a state record of 47.37 seconds. A senior Stanford signee, Thompson

Girls' Athlete of the Year

Greenhill / Cross Country
Only a sophomore, Sveinsson already has two Gatorade State Cross Country
Runner of the Year awards to her credit. Her incredible season began with a
rout at the SPC championships, where she won the XC title by nearly a full
minute. Sveinsson then took part in both the Nike and Foot Locker year-end
events, something few elite runners attempt. Sveinsson won the Nike South
Regional and the Nike Cross Nationals. She took third at the Foot Locker South
Regional and was fourth at the Foot Locker Championships.

Hockaday / Swimming
Beck missed much of her senior season with injuries but returned in time to
claim four golds at the SPC championships. A Texas recruit, Beck was among the
top 25 finishers in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at last summer's Olympic Trials.

Highland Park / Volleyball
A four-year starter on one of the state's top teams, Culwell capped her career by
leading the Scots to the Class 4A state championship match in the fall. Culwell,
an Auburn signee, is rated the nation's No. 34 recruit by PrepVolleyball.com.

Lake Highlands / Gymnastics

year. A former training partner of Olympians Carly Patterson and Nastia Liukin,
Morrison has committed to LSU.
