BOYS' TEAM OF THE YEAR
CATHOLIC MEMORIAL
Ice Hockey
The Knights were back on top this season, as the state's preeminent program
won its first Super 8 championship since 2005. The team's leading scorer, junior
forward Derek Colucci, broke his jaw in the first game of the tournament
but returned to play in the final, notching a goal and an assist in the win.
Senior defenseman Garrett Noonan solidified the backline and provided
scoring punch, and junior T.J. O'Brien came through with a hat trick in the
championship game. Catholic Memorial has won 13 Super 8 championships.
OTHER FINALISTS
BC HIGH
Football
The Eagles returned to glory by winning the Division 1 Super Bowl for the
first time since 2000. Senior Tyler Horan ran for 139 yards and a touchdown
in the title game, helping BC High defeat Brockton, 13-7.
FRAMINGHAM
Wrestling
Powered by All-State champions Nick Flannery and Walter Pope, Framingham
won the Division 1 team title. Flannery, a junior, won at 125 pounds,
while Pope, a senior, won at 140.
ST. JOHN'S (SHREWSBURY)
Basketball
The Pioneers proved their superiority in the Division 1 state title game, when
the trio of senior Matt LaBove, sophomore Richard Rogers and junior David
White led St. John's past Lynn English, 80-62.
GIRLS' TEAM OF THE YEAR
CENTRAL CATHOLIC
Basketball
Led by superstar junior Katie Zenevitch, the Raiders went 22-3 and won the
program's first state championship. Zenevitch, a 6-foot-3 center, had a performance
for the ages in the Division 1 title game, scoring 28 points and
grabbing 26 rebounds to lead Central past Shepherd Hill, 67-62. The Boston
College commit hit four clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Coach Sue Downer could also count on solid contributions from talented
sophomores Gabie Polce and Melissa Miller.
OTHER FINALISTS
ACTON-BOXBORO
Soccer
The Colonials made their second straight trip to the state final, led by seniors
Cassie Wagner and Ceci Jensen. Junior Hayley Brock missed most of the season
while playing for the U17 National Team, and A-B still went 22-1-1.
BARNSTABLE
Gymnastics
With three consecutive state titles (including an easy win this season) and seven
in the last nine years, Barnstable gymnastics is one of the state's best programs in
any sport. Junior Leah Pacheco finished fourth at the state meet to lead the way.
ST. MARY'S
Ice Hockey
Senior defenseman Alex Smith and junior forward Courtney Winters led the
Spartans to their second undefeated season in a row. Senior goalie Kelsey
Magrane was also critical in the march to the Division 1 state title.
