BOYS' TEAM OF THE YEAR

MONTROSE CHRISTIAN
Basketball
Despite a loss to Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) in the National High School Invitational semifinals, the Mustangs finished the season ranked No. 8 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 after putting together an impressive 20-3 campaign. Montrose boasted a powerful frontcourt trio in junior Terrence Ross and Villanova- bound seniors Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood. Yarou poured in 20.6 points and grabbed 12.6 rebounds per game, while Ross (14.8) and Armwood (12.3) each averaged double figures in points.

OTHER FINALISTS

GONZAGA
Track
Gonzaga continues to produce world-class talent and the track team is no exception. Behind juniors Stacey Robinson, Bill Ledder and Aaron Shepherd, Gonzaga captured the WCAC championship during the indoor season.

RIVER HILL
Football
Buoyed by the play of senior Michael Campanaro (29 TDs) and a stifling defense, the Hawks completed their second consecutive undefeated season and clinched back-to-back Maryland Class 2A crowns.

WALTER JOHNSON
Cross Country
The Wildcats entered the state meet intent on procuring the school's first title. Mission accomplished. Senior Sean O'Leary led the way with a fifth-place finish as Walter Johnson scored 48 points to claim the Class 4A crown.

GIRLS' TEAM OF THE YEAR

H.D. WOODSON
Basketball
Woodson may not have generated a national buzz, but opponents were well aware of how talented Frank Oliver's troops were this winter. Woodson won 22 games and ended the year on an 11-game winning streak. The Warriors capped the season with a 61-43 win over Good Counsel in the city finals. Junior Ronika Ransford netted a game-high 21 points. Senior center Jeniece Johnson (15 points in the finals) overcame questions regarding her eligibility and the death of her mother early in the season to turn in an inspiring campaign.

OTHER FINALISTS

ATHOLTON
Field Hockey
In just three seasons at the helm of the Atholton program, head coach Jim Brown turned a four-win club into a state finalist. This past fall, Atholton won 14 games before losing to Fallston, 4-3, in the Maryland Class 3A title game.

FLINT HILL
Tennis
While the boys'team went undefeated in its title run, the girls overcame a pair of losses to win their second straight Division I crown. Sophomores Sonja Meighan and Vanessa Vanderdys starred for Flint Hill, which also won the ISL tourney.

PAINT BRANCH
Track
Paced by wins in the relays and strong individual efforts, the Panthers claimed the Class 3A indoor title. Senior Vanessa Jules repeated as high jump champ, while classmate Arielle Statham captured a crown in the 55 dash.
