Millikan (Long Beach, Calif.) coach Rob Petkovic is a stickler for detail.
Evidence of that fact surfaced this weekend. After Millikan posted a pair of Saturday victories in its own tournament, the coach of the FAB 50 No. 5 boys team let lose this bit of trivia: Millikan's next win will be the program's 500th.
Millikan will not have to wait long for that first crack at the milestone as it faces Pacifica (Garden Grove, Calif.) on Monday.
Millikan is off to a 3-0-1 start, and Jose Torres and Ruben Sandoval who have been the driving forces on offense, netted a combined five goals over the weekend.
Christian Brothers High School (St. Louis) holds the national record for victories with more than 1,100 record victories.
Climbing The Ladder: The De La Salle vs. Archbishop Mitty boys match last week not only pitted the FAB 50 No. 9 and 10 teams, it also matched the two highest ranking programs from neighboring sections -- De La Salle from the North Coast Section and Mitty from the Central Coast Section.
From a ranking standpoint, these results are invaluable in measuring teams from these sections that will not meet, but have this De La Salle-Mitty common opponent situation.
Chalk one up for visiting De La Salle and the North Coast Section. De La Salle posted a 3-2 victory over Mitty.
Looking Ahead: The first major girls soccer tournament with national implications -- The Michelle Akers Classic -- takes place Dec. 19-21 at Lake Mary (Fla.). FAB 50 No. 28 Oviedo and No. 34 Lake Mary headline the 16-team field The boys soccer participants for the Southern California High School Soccer Showcase have been finalized, and the loaded field will have significant FAB 50 implications. The tournament includes preseason No. 4 Brophy Prep (Ariz.), No. 5 Millikan (Calif.), No. 10 De La Salle (Calif.), No. 15 Bellarmine (Calif.) and No. 42 Cathedral Catholic. The event will be held in San Diego.
