FAB 50 No. 1 will be settled this week

Updated: April 8, 2009, 12:33 AM ET

ESPN will release the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national girls' soccer winter rankings each week of the regular season and playoffs, continuing through the final matches of the Texas state playoffs.

One title on the field will be determined this week, and it could lead to a national title.

The Texas 5A tournament is down to the semifinals, and three of the four remaining teams could make a case for FAB 50 No. 1 with a championship. Of course, Reagan (San Antonio) is the frontrunner, currently ranked No. 1. However, the Rattlers will face a stiff challenge in Coppell, the lone Dallas-area team remaining in the event. Historically, the Dallas state tournament representatives have been the strongest teams in Texas. But this year Coppell enters as the No. 4 seed. In the other semifinal match, FAB 50 No. 3 The Woodlands takes on No. 4 Clear Lake in a Houston showdown. Clear Lake's undefeated season and strong regional run promopted a major jump in this week's rankings to give the squad a shot at No. 1, if it can knock off a pair of Top 5 programs.

Patiently waiting in the wings is Melbourne (Fla.). If Coppell emerges as the Texas state champion, it will leave Melbourne an easy call at No. 1 this season. If Coppell does not win the state title, the FAB 50 No. 1 could come down to the number of quality results between the Texas 5A champ and the Florida 6A champ.

Results through April 5.
