High scorers turning Page into a contender

As curator of the Tennessee girls' soccer 100-plus career goal scoring list for the past 15 years, Pete Wade charted and dreamed.

Kate Maguigan (left) and Kelsey Wilkes have combined for 60 goals as Page is off to a 15-0-0 start.

"I thought wouldn't that be great to have someone on the list," said Wade, the coach at Page High School (Franklin, Tenn.), a small-school program of modest success located in the Nashville suburbs.

Looks like Wade is getting his wish & not once, but twice over.

Page features two of Tennessee's most prolific finishers this year, junior Kate Maguigan and freshman Kelsey Wilkes. Maguigan has 33 goals and Wilkes has 27 as Page is off to a school-best 15-0-0 start and ranked No. 6 among the state 's Class AA-A programs by the state coaches association. Page recently defeated rival Hume-Fogg (Nashville, Tenn.) for the first time since 1997.

"We've had some big scorers in the past, but not with the support like this," said Wade, who is in his 12th year as the program's coach.

This is the first time Page has had a pair of 20-plus goal scorers in the same season.

Maguigan has 115 career goals, making her the first Page player on the state's 100-plus list and she's nearing the all-time top 20. Wilkes' hot start, which included six hat tricks in her first 12 matches, gives Wade the realistic expectation of a second Page 100-plus goal scorer in the future.

Maguigan, who is considering the University of Tennessee and University of South Carolina, and Wilkes both play club soccer for Brentwood SC, but in different age groups.

Last year, Maguigan led Tennessee with 53 goals. This year, her totals are down but the team's winning percentage is up thanks to the 1-2 scoring punch.

"It's been nice," Maguigan, a midfielder, said of Wilkes' scoring help. "She finishes really well. I'm getting a lot more assists. This year, we have more options."

In addition to the 60 combined goals by Maguigan and Wilkes, the rest of the team has pitched in 44 goals as Page has outscored its opponents 104-5.

During Wade's tenure, Page has three times advanced to the sub-states, the round prior to the eight-team state tournament. This year's team has a realistic chance of qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in school history.

"Last year, we were a sliver away from going to the state tournament," Wade said. "Kate was like a one-person team last year. Now we have others who can step up, and we have that little extra with Kelsey."

Wilkes is proven to be the speedy finisher while Maguigan has taken on the role of a finisher from distance, often teeing up shots outside the 18.

Wilkes' influence was felt immediately as she scored a hat trick in her first varsity match.

"I expected to use my speed and I expected to get a lot of goals," Wilkes said. "I had a hat trick in my first game and that was a real motivation. I realized I could keep scoring and keep helping the team."

Wade said a friendly rivalry has developed between the players.

Maguigan established all of the scoring records that Wilkes is now chasing. The first record in Wilkes' sight is Maguigan's freshman mark of 30 goals.

"When Kate scored 30 goals as a freshman, I never thought I'd live long enough to see that again," Wade said. "But they are good about it. Kate has set the records and Kelsey is going for some of those records."

Maguigan doesn't mind sharing the scoring burden and watching a teammate chase down her marks.

"I think it's fine as long as the team does well," she said.
