In its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, Gatorade joined with RISE Magazine to name senior pitcher LINDSEY DUNLAP of HUEYTOWN HIGH as its 2007-2008 Alabama Softball Player of the Year.
The senior left-handed pitcher finished 41-1 with a 0.57 ERA, recording 442 strikeouts in 247 innings this season to lead the Golden Gophers (61-5-2) to the Class 6A state championship. A four-time member of the Birmingham News Super All-Metro Team and four-time All-State selection, Dunlap earned Class 6A Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
Dunlap has maintained a 3.44 GPA in the classroom. She volunteers on behalf of multiple community-service initiatives, donating her time to the Special Olympics in addition to mentoring and coaching youth athletes at year-round local softball clinics.
"She doesn't seem to be throwing harder than the other top pitchers," said Lawrence Yelding, head coach of state runner-up Daphne High. "But that ball is moving every which way; she doesn't throw anything straight. Her pitches just have unbelievable movement."
Dunlap has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Mississippi State University this fall.
