Each week, the ESPN FAB 50 Volleyball rankings will be released, tracking the top teams in the country.
Teams across the nation raced into the next phases of their seasons and many remained unbeaten. La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.) 15-0, Benet (Lisle, Ill.) 26-0, Papillion La Vista (Papillion, Neb.) 26-0, Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C.) 23-0, Washburn Rural (Topeka, Kan.) 23-0, Ursuline (Cincinnati, Ohio) 22-0, Olmsted Falls (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) 22-0, and Cherry Creek (Cherry Creek, Colo.) 18-0 make up the exclusive list.
The Papillion-La Vista volleyball team survived the State Premier Papio/Pius/Marian volleyball triangular match at Omaha Marian. The Monarchs defeated the Thunderbolts of Pius 26-24, 25-17 and the Crusaders of Marian 25-15, 25-17 in front of a packed house. The duo of Nebraska recruit Gina Mancuso and Wichita State recruit Chelsey Feekin had 34 kills and 34 set assists, respectively.
In Illinois, undefeated Benet was tested by Lemont, but outlasted the competitor 2-1. Senior outside hitter Ariana Mankus collected 16 kills in the match for Benet and libero Paige Vargas contributed 17 digs.
La Costa Canyon survived the field in fine form at the California Challenge. Katie Fuller (USC), Lydia Rudnick (Pepperdine) received all tournament honors and junior Natalie Haglund was named MVP of the tournament.
The California Challenge took place at Torrey Pines High School, where competitive programs from throughout California competed, including five FAB 50 teams: La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad), Dos Pueblos (Goleta), Marymount (Los Angeles), Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach), and Wilson (Long Beach). All advanced to the gold bracket.
The rankings of the California teams stayed pretty even with the exception of Marymount and Dos Pueblos, which played head to head with the Chargers coming out on top of the Sailors 3-1. Mira Costa remained unbeaten by Long Beach Wilson, as the two squared off for the third time this season in head to head competition. The lopsided match never found consistency with scores of 25-14, 25-19, 11-25, 25-13 in favor of Mira Costa.
Redlands East Valley (Redlands) made it into this week's FAB 50 with a strong finish at the event. The Wildcats finished with a strong win over Torrey Pines and suffered its only loss of the season to Long Beach Wilson.
Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) had steadily worked its way up the rankings, but suffered a loss this week to Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) that will be reflected in next week's rankings.
