Nerve irritation shelves Padilla

NEW YORK -- Dodgers right-hander Vicente Padilla won't be able to throw a baseball for a week to 10 days after being diagnosed with an irritation of the radial nerve in his right forearm following an MRI exam on Monday.

That fact alone probably means Padilla will be lost beyond May 8, the first day he is eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list.

"What we know is that we're going to have to wait a while before he can throw,'' Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "We just have to let it quiet down a little bit and go from there. I don't know [how long that will take], but it is certainly something we will have to pay attention to, and it isn't something where we can say, 'It's going to take this period of time.' We have to wait and see.''

Padilla's spot in the rotation comes up Wednesday for the first time since he was shelved. The Dodgers are expected to purchase the contract of right-hander John Ely, whom they acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the Juan Pierre trade last December.

Ely, who is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts for the Isotopes, will be making his major league debut.
