ANAHEIM -- The Los Angeles Angels placed struggling third baseman Brandon Wood on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Nobody was making much of an effort to hide the fact that it's more about his ailing swing than an injury.
Wood developed a slightly strained hip flexor while swinging a bat, then aggravated it while landing on Albert Pujols making an awkward tag attempt Sunday in St. Louis.
Wood, 25, is batting .156 with three extra-base hits in 122 at-bats. He said trainers have told him he could resume baseball activities by this weekend. After that, Wood will join Triple-A Salt Lake on a rehabilitation assignment. Placing him on the DL was the only way to get Wood down to the minors without the risk of losing him via a waiver claim. He is out of options.
"It gives me an opportunity, once this thing cleans up, to actually work on my swing without hurting the big club here," Wood said. "I'll look at it as an opportunity to get better."
The Angels also activated Maicer Izturis from the DL and he was in the starting lineup at third base.
Center fielder Torii Hunter was not with the club for Tuesday night's game against Toronto. He was granted permission to go to Texas for his son's graduation from high school.
