Dodgers call-ups rewarded with suits

HOUSTON -- The Los Angeles Dodgers' team hotel in Houston where they are playing the Houston Astros is attached to the Galleria, the city's largest and most upscale shopping mall. On Friday morning, veterans Ryan Theriot and Jamey Carroll took the team's two first-time September call-ups, John Lindsey and Russell Mitchell, to the mall's Nieman Marcus store and bought them each a suit.

"They told us when we got to Houston, they were going to wake us up one morning and take us to get a big league suit," said Lindsey, adding that he wasn't sure what differentiated a big league suit from a minor league one. "It was unbelievable, just such a nice thing for them to do."

Lindsey is the oldest non-Asian born player (33) to make his major league debut since first baseman Alan Zinter, who was 34 when he played his first game for the Astros eight years ago. He spent 16 seasons in the minor leagues without making the majors, more than any current player. He spent time with four MLB organizations, playing in the Mexican league in between, and working at the YMCA in his hometown of Hattiesburg, Miss. for extra money.

Mitchell was called up on Sept. 6 and made his major league debut two days later against the San Diego Padres.
