ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Angels placed struggling left-hander Scott Kazmir on the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his lower back following Friday's 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The move buys the Angels some time as they figure out what to do with Kazmir, who had a 5.94 ERA last season, struggled throughout the spring and couldn't get out of the second inning in his 2011 debut in Kansas City. Kazmir, who was scheduled to pitch Saturday, will be replaced in the rotation by right-hander Matt Palmer, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Kazmir said he injured his back during his final exhibition start against the Dodgers at Angel Stadium on March 29 and that it became so uncomfortable he canceled his bullpen session Wednesday in Tampa Bay.

"It's just lower-back tightness, nothing out of the ordinary," Kazmir said. "It's very frustrating. I just did a couple things to change my delivery, and it ended up stiffening up on me."

The Angels' rotation suddenly is depleted by injuries at the back end. Joel Pineiro is on the DL with tightness behind his right shoulder and figures to be out for at least another three weeks. The Angels likely will recall Trevor Bell from Triple-A to fill Pineiro's spot starting Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians.
