Downs, a left-hander, was the Angels' biggest free-agent acquisition over the winter, but he has pitched in just two games for them. He began the season on the DL with a broken left big toe.
"I'm trying to stay as positive as I can," Downs said. "Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the way it's started, but it's going to finish a lot better."
Downs said he had to visit the emergency room twice while the Angels were in Texas earlier this week. He said he didn't sleep for three nights, couldn't keep down food or water and lost nine pounds.
The Angels recalled pitcher Trevor Bell from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill Downs' roster spot.
