Andre Ethier extends hit streak to 26

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Andre Ethier extended his major league-record for the longest April hitting streak to 26 games, the second-longest by any Dodgers player since the team moved to town from Brooklyn in 1958.

Ethier did it with an opposite-field, bloop single off San Diego Padres right-hander Tim Stauffer in the bottom of the fourth inning on Saturday night.

"This has been fun," Ethier said after the game, during which he went 2-for-4 in a 5-2 loss. "It's a chance to add my name to another part of Dodgers history, which is something pretty special."

Ethier began the day tied with Paul Lo Duca, Willie Davis and Steve Sax on that list with a 25-game hitting streak. He now stands just five short of the all-time franchise mark of 31 games, set by Davis in 1969. There was at least one additional streak longer than Ethier's current one by a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Zack Wheat, who hit in 29 consecutive games back in 1916.

Ethier has hit safely in all but one of the Dodgers' 28 games this season. Ethier added another single in the Dodgers' loss Saturday, his 40th of the month, tying the club record for April -- shared by Mike Piazza (1996) and Rafael Furcal (2008).

Ethier has 41 hits for the year, including one on Opening Day March 31.
