Brown likely to become free agent

Los Angeles Lakers guard Shannon Brown will likely opt out of the final year of his contract on Wednesday and become a free agent, his agent Mark Bartelstein said Monday.

"We haven't made a decision yet. We're going to wait until the 30th, but we're probably going to opt out," Bartelstein said.

Brown has one year and $2.15 million remaining on his contract with the Lakers. He has said that he prefers to remain with the Lakers, but that long-term security is important to him.

Brown quickly became a fan favorite in Los Angeles with his high-flying dunks and hustle after the Lakers acquired him from the Charlotte Bobcats in the middle of the 2009 season. He averaged 8.1 points and 2.2 rebounds this season in a little over 20 minutes a game.
