After not having any rookies on the roster last season, the Los Angeles Lakers signed second-round draft pick Derrick Caracter on Friday a day after inking their other second-round selection, Devin Ebanks, on Thursday -- assuring there will be rooks around to fulfill the veterans' biddings.
Caracter, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound forward taken with the No. 58 pick, was being courted by several teams overseas before settling on a two-year deal with the Lakers. According to Caracter's agent, Happy Walters, Caracter is guaranteed the rookie minimum of $473,604 in 2010-11 with a team option in place worth approximately $788,000 for the following season.
The 22-year-old has shed almost 30 pounds since finishing his junior season at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he averaged 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in 27 games with the Miners.
Ebanks, a 6-9, 215-pound swingman selected No. 43 out of West Virginia, signed a non-guaranteed deal for the rookie minimum if he makes the team, according to the Los Angeles Times.
