UCLA offensive lineman Jeff Baca has been ruled academically ineligible pending an appeal with the NCAA, he said Tuesday.

Baca, who started every game last season at left guard, said there is a possibility the ineligibility could be overturned before the Sept. 4 season opener at Kansas State.

"I'm working on an appeal and there's just no telling what the timetable is," said Baca, a 6-foot-4, 305-pound junior from Mission Viejo High School. "Things happen like this and it's unfortunate."

This is the second bit of bad news to hit the offensive line in two days. On Monday, coach Rick Neuheisel announced he had suspended right tackle Mike Harris for one game because of an unspecified violation of team rules.

Baca worked out with the first team Monday and Tuesday, but Harris worked with the second string.
