Anaheim Ducks call up Ray Emery

Ray Emery is back in the NHL.

The goaltender was recalled by the Anaheim Ducks and slated to back up Curtis McElhinney for Wednesday night's game against the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

He went 2-1-0 with the Ducks' AHL farm team in Syracuse this month, sporting a .925 save percentage and 2.62 goals-against average.

Emery signed a one-year, two-way deal Feb. 7 that pays him a $500,000, pro-rated salary in the NHL and $105,000 in the minors.

"I'm excited to get an opportunity to face NHL shooters & continue to improve in practice. If games present themselves I'm up for that challenge as well," Emery said in a text to ESPN.com.

The Ducks have been going with McElhinney because starter Jonas Hiller has been battling recurrent lightheadedness. He was placed on injured reserve Feb. 16.

The team called up Timo Pielmeier to back up McElhinney, but he was sent to Syracuse Wednesday to make room for Emery.

The 28-year-old is attempting a comeback from a hip condition that threatened his career. Emery underwent specialized hip surgery in April to address deterioration of the ball of his right hip without having to undergo a full replacement.

He rehabbed for eight months in the Toronto area, working every day with trainer Matt Nichol.

"I've been lucky," Emery told ESPN.com earlier this month. "It has been long, but I haven't had any crazy setbacks. It's been really gradual but consistently moving forward. Maybe a few things took longer than I thought, but all in all I've been lucky. My body responded well to it. Everything came as it should."

Emery has a career record of 87-51-15 in 163 appearances with the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers. He has a career 2.70 GAA and .907 save percentage and led the Senators to an appearance in the 2007 Stanley Cup finals.
