High pitch counts sink starters

Several years ago, when Jack McKeon was managing in Cincinnati and your humble correspondent was covering the Reds for a now-defunct daily newspaper, any time a starting pitcher had a bad game that resulted in a loss, McKeon would always say during his postgame comments that, "It all starts out there in the middle of the field.''
