Pitcher suspended three games after brawl
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The minor-league pitcher Jose Offerman attacked with a bat last week was suspended three games Tuesday for his role in the fight.
The independent Atlantic League also fined Matt Beech of Bridgeport Bluefish an undisclosed amount. Long Island Ducks catcher Jared Price was suspended two games and fined.
Beech hit Offerman with a pitch last Aug. 14 and the former major-league All-Star infielder, who had homered in his first at-bat, charged the mound. Offerman broke the middle finger on Beech's non-throwing hand and gave Bridgeport catcher John Nathans a concussion.
Offerman was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and is due in Bridgeport Superior on Thursday. He was suspended by the league pending the resolution of his legal case.
