NEW YORK -- A minor leaguer in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization has been given a 50-game drug suspension.
Tyler Bighames was punished following a second positive test for a drug of abuse. His suspension will take effect at the start of next season.
The commissioner's office made the announcement Monday.
The 18-year-old Bighames was selected in the 31st round of the amateur draft in June. He batted .216 with a home run and eight RBIs in 33 games last season for the Cardinals' team in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He played several positions, appearing most often at the corner outfield spots.
