Rogers: Cubs turn to Hendricks in Game 2

Don't look past Kyle Hendricks just because he's soft-spoken and unemotional. The Cubs' Game 2 starter knows how to pitch and says he's ready. The Cubs need him to be, or they could be headed back to Chicago down 0-2.

What if Kershaw had thrown Granderson a curve?

If Clayton Kershaw had thrown Curtis Granderson a curveball in the 7th inning of Game 1, maybe nobody would be talking about his postseason struggles.

Stark: My World Series prediction

Our guy Jayson Stark doesn't have the best track record when it comes to predicting who will win the World Series. But this year is different. We promise!

Cubs have been here before

And it has never worked out well for them. Prior to Friday's Game 1 defeat, Chicago had lost the first game of a postseason series 11 times. On each of those occasions, the Cubs failed to win the series.

Stats & Info

Mets in good spot after winning Game 1

The Mets are 3-1 in franchise history when winning Game 1 of a postseason series on the road, with the only series loss coming in the 1988 NLCS vs. the Dodgers. Game 2 vs. the Dodgers is tonight.

Kyle Hendricks doesn't know it. But he'll make history today: First starting pitcher to ever bat 8th in a postseason game. Even Babe Ruth hit 9th in every World Series game he ever pitched

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

Joe Maddon never considered starting Kyle Schwarber today though he's 4 for 6 this postseason. He's 8 for 56 against lefties this year. Cubs face lefty Jaime Garcia

Saturday's MLB postseason schedule

  • Game 2: Cubs at Cardinals, 5:37 p.m. ET (Cardinals lead NLDS series 1-0)
  • Game 2: Mets at Dodgers, 9:07 p.m. ET (Mets lead NLDS series 1-0)

Jays replace injured Cecil with Tepera

Blue Jays closer Brett Cecil has a torn left calf muscle, and he's been replaced on the ALDS roster with RHP Ryan Tepera. Toronto will try to climb back from a 2-0 deficit to Texas in Game 3 on Sunday.

The enigmatic, unhittable Zack Greinke

In advance of his Game 2 start in the NLDS vs. the Mets, The Mag examined Greinke and found a resiliency in the enigmatic Dodgers ace that has enabled the possible Cy Young winner's record-book season. Mastery and mystery

Really interesting comments from Mike Matheny on why he had Adam Wainwright warming up in the 9th last night. "That had a couple points to it. One of those points is getting Adam up and hot and his heart beatin', and I think part of it's also telling him what we think of him and how we may use him."

Jayson Stark Senior Writer, ESPN.com

Brandon Moss is a mild surprise at 1B for the Cardinals today. Moss has never faced Kyle Hendricks. But he did reach base 6 times in 9 trips last weekend in Atlanta. Mike Matheny: "We need to keep him hot. We think he can be a difference maker"

Eddie Matz ESPN Senior Writer

Minimal changes to the Cardinals lineup compared to game one: Facing RHP Kyle Hendricks, lefty Brandon Moss gets the nod at 1B, pushing rookie Stephen Piscotty to RF, and Randal Grichuk to the pine. Yadier Molina is back behind the dish, bum thumb and all.

Kyle Schwarber not in Game 2 lineup

The Cubs' power-hitting lefty won't start vs. Cardinals LHP Jaime Garcia in Game 2 of the NLDS tonight, while Jorge Soler, Austin Jackson and Miguel Montero all got the nod.

Eddie Matz ESPN Senior Writer

Adam Wainwright on how the Cardinals' game one win vs. the Cubs affects the rest of the NLDS: "Well, I think the statistics speak for themselves in that regard...for us to get out to a 1-game lead was huge." For the record, the Cards have never lost an NLDS after winning the opener (8-0).

ICYMI: Prince goes face down

The celebration of winning Game 2 of the ALDS didn't start off great for Prince Fielder, as his attempt to climb the dugout fence ended with him tumbling to the ground.

Adrian Beltre excused from team practice

The Rangers 3B was excused today so he could rest his lower back strain. Beltre exited Game 1 of the ALDS early and didn't play in Game 2. He'll be evaluated before Game 3 vs. the Jays on Sunday night.

History against Cubs after losing Game 1

The Cubs have lost Game 1 of a postseason series 12 times in team history after falling to the Cardinals on Friday night. Chicago never rallied to win the series in any of the 11 previous series.

BBTN: Game 2 is a must-win for the Cubs

The Cardinals took Game 1 of the NLDS, and Tim Kurkjian said: "If [Kyle Hendricks] can win Game 2, then you have Jake Arrieta going at home in Game 3. That's why this one is so important."
