Soriano, Bell are All-Star replacements

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Rafael Soriano and San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell were named as replacements for the AL and NL teams, respectively, for next week's All-Star Game.

Soriano will replace New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera for the AL and Bell will replace Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo for the NL.

Rivera pulled out of next week's game in Anaheim because of nagging injuries. Major League Baseball added Soriano on Wednesday.

Gallardo was put on the 15-day disabled list this week with a left oblique strain. NL All-Star manager Charlie Manuel chose Bell since he had also chosen Gallardo.

It's the first All-Star selection for Soriano, who is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA and 23 saves in 24 opportunities this season, and the second straight All-Star selection for Bell, who was the loser in last year's game. He is tied for the NL lead with 23 saves. He is 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA.

Soriano joins Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford and David Price in representing the Rays.
