GREINKE WINS A.L. CY YOUNG AWARD
Zack Greinke was named the American League Cy Young Award winner yesterday afternoon. Greinke posted a 16-8 record for Kansas City during the 2009 season. Only one other starting pitcher has won the Cy Young Award while posting as few as 16 wins in a non-shortened season. Brandon Webb captured the N.L. Cy Young Award for the Diamondbacks in 2006 despite winning only 16 games. Three starting pitchers won the Award with as few as 16 wins in a season that was shortened by a work stoppage: Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 (13 wins), David Cone in 1994 (16 wins) and Greg Maddux in 1994 (16 wins).
