BOSTON -- Some Red Sox fans desperate to see a World Series game shelled out hundreds of dollars for tickets -- only to find out later they were fakes.
Boston police estimate that scam artists may have sold as much
as $50,000 dollars in bogus tickets to unsuspecting fans during
the first two games of the series at Fenway Park.
The Boston Herald reported that police arrested three members of
a New York-based gang of counterfeit ticket sellers, but other
members of the gang eluded capture.
One victim, Phil Hardin of New Jersey, says he paid $450 for what he thought were two grandstand tickets for Game 1. When he got to the gate at Fenway, he was learned that the tickets were fake.
Hardin says security officials told him they confiscated about
70 fake tickets that night.
