The Providence Journal reported Monday that some in the Red Sox organization were angered by the allegation. The Red Sox slugger missed the three-game series against New York with pharyngitis, the same illness that knocked Pedro Martinez out of a scheduled start last week.
"Really? That's just great, huh?" a Red Sox player was quoted by the newspaper after being told of the claim.
Team president/CEO Larry Lucchino told The Boston Globe: "I don't usually say this but no comment. No comment.
"You know, it's hard to say no comment, then comment on things you say. Let's just say that we don't know enough to comment. Let me state no comment on the entire scenario."
According to the Providence Journal's report, a Ritz-Carlton employee confirmed Ramirez's appearance Saturday night between 9 and 9:30 p.m., while emphasizing that Ramirez wasn't drinking alcohol. Enrique Wilson told reporters Monday he was the Yankee that Ramirez was seen with at the hotel.
Ramirez lives in the hotel's condominium tower during the baseball season, according to the newspaper.
Ramirez reportedly went to Fenway Park to see a member of the Red Sox's medical staff on Saturday, but he was not at the ballpark on Sunday. Ramirez did not play in Monday's interleague game in Philadelphia.
The Yankees took two of three from the Red Sox and have a five-game lead in the AL East.
