Some American League MVP Award notes as compiled by ESPN Research and complete 2003 voting results:

  • Ten different players received a first-place vote, one short of the record set in the 1947 NL vote and matched in the 1977 AL vote.

  • Twenty seven players received at least one vote.

  • Four pitchers received a vote, but AL Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay was not one of them.

  • Alex Rodriguez is the only player to recieve at least one vote on all 28 ballots.

  • The only other player on a last-place team to win an MVP award was the Chicago Cubs' Andre Dawson in 1987.

  • Rodriguez was picked first on six ballots, the fewest for an MVP winner since the New York Yankees' Mickey Mantle in 1957.

  • A-Rod's 242 points is a 61.7 percent share of the maximum total of 392 points -- the smallest share by a winner since Yogi Berra in 1951 received 54.8 percent (the smallest total ever for a winner).
