Schmidt has sore right shoulder
The move is retroactive to March 26 making the right-hander eligible to return April 10 from the injury, which is unrelated to his offseason elbow surgery to remove scar tissue and repair a torn tendon.
Schmidt joins sidelined closer Robb Nen, who was put on the DL last week. Nen is trying to recover from three shoulder operations that caused him to miss the entire 2003 season. He hasn't thrown off a mound in more than a week because of rotator cuff tendinitis.
Right-hander David Aardsma, the Giants' No. 1 draft pick last year, will get a chance to help the injury-plagued staff.
"We need a hard throwing right-hander in the bullpen," manager Felipe Alou said. "When he came to camp, I noticed he had a confident walk. And when he's pitched he's hit the gun with a 97 mph fastball."
The Giants also placed outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds and infielder Lance Niekro on the disabled list as part of moves that cut the roster to 25 players. Hammonds broke his right thumb when he was hit on the hand by a pitch March 9.
The Giants also optioned LHP Noah Lowry, C Trey Lunsford and OFs Jason Ellison and Todd Linden to Triple-A Fresno. They reassigned RHP Brian Cooper, RHP Dave Veres, RHP Tyler Walker, LHP Jeff Urban, INF Deivi Cruz, INF Brian Dallimore, INF Francisco Santos, and OF Nathan Hayes to their minor league camp.
Left-hander Chad Zerbe was designated for assignment.
