Reynolds was to be No. 4 starter before injury
The Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Andrew Good from Triple-A Tucson to replace Reynolds. Good was in uniform for Tuesday's opener against Colorado.
Reynolds was to begin the season in the bullpen, the first time that's happened to him in 10 years, after going 1-4 with a 14.02 ERA in spring training outings.
"He had some discomfort in his shoulder," manager Bob Brenly said. "We sent him to Dr. (Michael) Lee yesterday and there is some inflammation in the rotator cuff, which certainly could be an explanation for the problems that Shane's been having this spring."
Reynolds was signed to a $1 million, one-year contract with the expectation that he would be the No. 4 starter. But after his awful spring, he lost out to rookie Casey Daigle, with knuckleballer Steve Sparks getting the No. 5 spot.
Reynolds was to have been the long reliever out of he bullpen, but placing him on the disabled list will allow him to rest the arm for a few days, then begin throwing on a regulated program.
"It's something that needs to be addressed," Brenly said, "then hopefully he can come back and be the guy we thought he was going to be."
Good appeared in 16 games for the Diamondbacks last season, 4-2 with a 5.29 ERA. He appeared in three spring training games with the big club this year, allowing three runs in six innings before being sent to Tucson.
