First baseman has sore left wrist
Minnesota Twins: The Twins activated outfielder Shannon Stewart on Thursday and placed first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz on the 15-day disabled list.
The Twins were expected to recall first baseman Justin Morneau from Triple-A Rochester on Friday to take Mientkiewicz's roster spot. Morneau was hitting .306 with 22 home runs and 63 RBIs in 72 games for Rochester.
Mientkiewicz took early batting practice Thursday but soreness persisted in his left wrist and he was sent back to Minneapolis for an MRI.
Stewart had been on the DL since May 18 with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He hit .333 with and scored three runs in three rehab games at Rochester.
In addition, catcher Joe Maurer underwent an MRI because of soreness and swelling in his surgically repaired left knee and was out of the lineup Thursday. Doctors changed his medication but the MRI showed no significant damage. He is day to day.
On Sunday, the Twins optioned OF Michael Restovich to Rochester in anticipation of Stewart's return.
New York Yankees: The Yankees placed right-hander Sam Marsonek on the 15-day disabled list and recalled righty Juan Padilla from Triple-A Columbus.
Marsonek strained his right knee slipping on a dock near his home in Florida during the All-Star break, manager Joe Torre said.
"I think it's pretty extensive, but not anything that can't be fixed," Torre said.
Marsonek, 25, made his major league debut Sunday against Tampa Bay, allowing two hits in 1 1-3 innings. He was 1-5 with 17 saves in 35 appearances for Columbus this season.
Padilla was recalled July 8, but didn't make an appearance before he was sent down again when right-hander Orlando Hernandez was activated from the DL. Padilla was 1-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 games in Columbus.
Montreal Expos: The Expos activated right-hander John Patterson from the disabled list and recalled infielder Henry Mateo from Triple-A Edmonton.
To make room for Patterson, the Expos optioned right-hander Shawn Hill to Double-A Harrisburg.
Patterson went on the DL on April 28 after he strained his right groin at San Diego. He was 1-2 with a 3.57 ERA in four starts after he was acquired in a trade with Arizona.
Mateo was batting .303 with 10 stolen bases in 30 games with Edmonton.
Hill went 1-2 with a 16.00 ERA in three starts for Montreal.
Arizona Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks placed right-hander Andrew Good and catcher Robby Hammock on the 15-day disabled list.
In corresponding moves, the club purchased the contract of reliever Mike Fetters from Triple-A Tucson and activated catcher Brent Mayne from the DL. Arizona also placed reliever Shane Reynolds (right knee) on the 60-day DL to open a 40-man roster spot for Fetters.
Good (1-2) appeared in 17 games, with two starts, before straining his right elbow. Hammock (left knee) has played in 47 games, hitting .213 with two home runs and 15 RBIs.
Fetters, 39, has seen time with eight major league teams and began his second tour with the Diamondbacks, who traded Duaner Sanchez to Pittsburgh to acquire him on July 6, 2002.
Arizona signed him to a minor league contract on June 21 and assigned him to Tucson.
Mayne has been rehabilitating a back strain since June 9.
Detroit Tigers: The Tigers activated utilityman Brandon Inge from the disabled list before playing the Yankees and recalled pitcher Wilfredo Ledezma from Double-A Erie.
Ledezma replaces reliever Franklyn German, who was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Inge takes the spot of outfielder Alex Sanchez, who went on the 15-day DL with a strained hamstring.
Inge was hitting .303 when he went on the disabled list July 26 with a broken finger, while Sanchez is hitting .325.
Ledezma spent last season with the Tigers as a Rule 5 pick, going 3-7 with a 5.79 ERA in 34 games. He was 10-3 with a 2.42 ERA in 17 appearances -- 16 starts -- this year with Erie.
Oakland Athletics: The Athletics signed four players selected in last month's draft, including right-hander Huston Street.
Street won the 2002 Outstanding Player award at the College World Series with the University of Texas. He was selected by Oakland between the first and second rounds with a compensation pick awarded for Baltimore's signing of shortstop Miguel Tejada.
The A's also signed catcher Kurt Suzuki, a second-round pick from NCAA champion Cal State Fullerton. South Carolina second baseman Kevin Melillo and Tennessee right-hander Scot Drucker also agreed to terms.
