Pirates remove Tike Redman from 40-man roster
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh center fielder Tike Redman was removed from the 40-man roster Saturday and must be traded or released within 10 days.
Pitchers Sean Burnett and John Van Benschoten, who each missed last season because of surgery, were reinstated from the 60-day disabled list along with second baseman Jose Castillo and outfielder Chris Duffy.
Redman hit .251 with two homers and 26 RBI in 135 games, but saw his playing time decrease during the season. He lost his starting job after Duffy moved up from Triple-A Indianapolis at midseason.
Added to the 40-man roster were infielders Yurendell DeCaster, Javier Guzman, Craig Stansberry and pitcher Josh Sharpless. Sharpless, a 24th-round draft pick in 2003, allowed only three earned runs in 36 1/3 innings -- an 0.74 ERA -- at Class A Lynchburg and Double-A Altoona.
