Carroll signs one-year deal, returns to Nationals

WASHINGTON -- Utility infielder Jamey Carroll agreed to a
one-year, $700,000 contract to return to the Washington Nationals.

Carroll played in 113 games for the Nationals in 2005, hitting
.251 with 22 RBI.

The deal, agreed to Wednesday, allows the sides to avoid salary

Five Nationals remain eligible for arbitration:
pitcher Luis Ayala, outfielder Marlon Byrd, first baseman Nick Johnson, catcher Brian Schneider and second baseman Alfonso Soriano.
