Dodgers' Kent to have minor wrist surgery
Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said Friday that hand specialist Dr. Norman Zemel will perform the operation in Los Angeles, with a projected recovery period of four to six weeks.
"It's more precautionary than anything else," Colletti said. "Throwing a baseball, he's got no problems. Swinging a bat, he's got no problems. He does have some discomfort when it's not baseball-related. The choice is to get it rectified as soon as possible.
"It's been explained to me as nothing more than a cleanup process. He was examined a while back, he had some discomfort, they put him on some medication. That seemed to calm it down. This hopefully will solve it long term. If he's back by the second week of March, it doesn't create any setback."
Colletti said Kent told him his wrist bothered him at the end of last season, and has been an irritant most of the winter.
"I would classify it as minor as can be, even though it's surgery," Colletti said.
Kent, who turns 38 in March, hit .289 with 29 homers, 100 runs scored and 105 RBI last season -- his first with the Dodgers. He is under contract for one more year.
Kent, who began his major league career in 1992 with Toronto, is baseball's career home run leader for second basemen. He hit his 300th homer as a second baseman on Aug. 27, and has an overall total of 331.
Meanwhile, Colletti said he'd probably speak with agent Scott Boras, who represents free-agent right-hander Jeff Weaver, in the next day or so. If the Dodgers don't re-sign Weaver by Sunday, they would have to wait until May 1 to do so.
The 29-year-old Weaver won a career-high 14 games last season, most on the staff.
When asked if a one-year deal with Weaver was possible, Colletti replied: "It has not been discussed."
Colletti has said for weeks that retaining Weaver was a long shot.
