Reds avoid arbitration, sign Pena, Valentin

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds agreed to one-year
contracts with outfielder Wily Mo Pena and catcher Javier Valentin
on Sunday, avoiding arbitration with both players.

Pena got a $1.25 million deal, while Valentin's contract is for
$1.15 million.

Pena batted .254 with 19 home runs and 51 RBI in 99 games for
the Reds last season. Valentin hit a career-high .281 with 14
homers and 50 RBI, his second season in Cincinnati.

Valentin shared catching duties with Jason LaRue, who agreed to
a $9.1 million, two-year contract last month, solidifying his role
as the No. 1 catcher. They combined for the best offensive output
at catcher in the major leagues.

Four Reds players remain eligible for arbitration: Adam Dunn,
Aaron Harang, Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez.
