Royals agree to contracts with Hernandez, Affeldt
The 27-year-old Hernandez, 8-14 with a 5.52 ERA last year, gets $1,225,000. He was the Opening Day starter in 2003 but missed the 2004 season following elbow surgery. He made $325,000 in 2005.
Hernandez could also make $40,000 in performance bonuses: $15,000 for 190 innings pitched and $25,000 for 200 innings pitched.
Affeldt, 26, who gets $1 million, was converted to a middle reliever last year and finished with an 0-2 record and a 5.26 ERA in 49 games. He became the only pitcher in the AL to make at least 25 starts and 120 total appearances over the past three seasons.
Outfielder Emil Brown is the Royals' only remaining player in arbitration. He asked for $1,755,000 and was offered $1.4 million after making $335,000 last year.
