The move was retroactive to Wednesday, when he injured his pitching arm during his Padres debut, a 3-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Estes is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA.
To take his roster spot, the Padres recalled right-hander Scott Cassidy from Triple-A Portland. Cassidy was on the opening day roster but was optioned to Portland after Monday's win over the Giants to make room for catcher Rob Bowen.
Manager Bruce Bochy said Woody Williams will take Estes' spot in the rotation. Because the Padres won't need a fifth starter for the first two weeks, Williams and Chan Ho Park started the season in the bullpen.
Estes is the third Padres player to be placed on the disabled list. First baseman Ryan Klesko (shoulder) and center fielder Mike Cameron (side muscle) started the season on the DL. There's a chance Klesko will need surgery, which could sideline him for two to four months.
