Roberts' groin injury needs some time to heal
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles placed second baseman Brian Roberts on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and recalled infielder Brandon Fahey from Triple-A Ottawa.
Roberts suffered a left groin strain Saturday, and his hip also had been bothering him. He is batting .330 with no homers, 13 RBI and nine stolen bases in 24 games.
"We feel like he's probably 10 days away, at least," manager Sam Perlozzo said. "This is a situation where we need Brian for the long haul."
Roberts was one of four Orioles who dealt with injuries on what Javy Lopez jokingly called "Black Saturday."
Shortstop Miguel Tejada, who left Saturday's game early because of a sore left knee that he hyperextended Friday, started Sunday at designated hitter to keep his consecutive games streak alive at 944.
"The main thing he was having problems with was out in the field," Perlozzo said. "We'll probably have to give him a couple of days of DHing and see if that doesn't help him out a little bit."
Lopez, Baltimore's primary designated hitter, experienced upper back spasms while warming up for Saturday's game. Perlozzo said he expected Lopez to miss a few days.
"Compared to yesterday, it's [better]," Lopez said. "I thought I was going to be out for a while."
The Orioles put Fahey into the lineup against Seattle left-hander Jamie Moyer, batting ninth. Fahey singled to left in the third inning in his first major league at-bat. The hit was part of a long day for the rookie, who had to take a 3 a.m. flight out of Ottawa and made it to Baltimore about 90 minutes before the game.
Kevin Millar expects to be out two to three days with a bruised right wrist suffered when he got hit by a pitch Saturday.
