Pettitte, 13-13 with a 4.37 ERA this season, left in the third inning of Tuesday's game in St. Louis after straining a flexor muscle in the elbow on his pitching arm. He had been slated to start Sunday against Philadelphia.
Astros manager Phil Garner said Pettitte is scheduled to start Tuesday against Cincinnati, and Wandy Rodriguez (9-9) will pitch on Sunday.
"I'm frustrated for sure," Pettitte said. "Obviously, you want to take the mound as much as you can, but you don't want to go out there and walk off again. Hopefully, I'll feel good on Tuesday."
Pettitte had a cortisone injection on Wednesday, and an MRI exam showed no structural damage. He threw on flat ground Friday for the first time since the injection, and Garner decided to delay his start.
"He didn't feel bad," Garner said, "but I just don't get the feeling he's going to be ready Sunday."
