Red Sox hire ex-Royals GM Baird as assistant to GM
BOSTON -- Former Royals general manager Allard Baird was hired by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday as an assistant to GM Theo Epstein.
Baird held the job with the Royals from June 2000 until he was fired on May 31.
The 44-year-old executive was hired last July as a special assignment scout for the Red Sox after spending 18 years in the Kansas City organization. He will retain that role with Boston, overseeing the pro scouting department and advising Epstein in many areas.
Baird started with the Royals in 1988 as a minor league hitting coach. After being fired this year when the team got off to a poor start, he was replaced by Dayton Moore.
