CINCINNATI -- The Cleveland Indians optioned left-hander Jeremy Sowers to Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday and recalled right-hander Matt Miller.
Sowers (1-6) allowed five runs in four innings Saturday night, including homers by Jeff Conine and Josh Hamilton, before the Indians went on to beat Cincinnati 8-6 in 11 innings.
The Indians had been counting on Sowers to be a key part of the team's rotation, but he struggled in his first full season in the majors. He had a 6.93 ERA in 12 starts and had allowed 79 hits, including 10 home runs, in 62 1-3 innings.
Sowers went 7-4 with two shutouts last season after being called up from the minors in late June.
