Red Sox place Schilling on 15-day DL, call up OF Murphy
The move was retroactive to Tuesday.
To take his roster spot, the Red Sox recalled outfielder David Murphy from Triple-A Pawtucket.
The Red Sox will need a starter for Tuesday's game at Seattle and will have to make another roster move then.
Manager Terry Francona said Schilling had stretching treatment at Fenway Park on Friday. He was due to fly to San Diego and rejoin the team either Friday night or Saturday.
"Today he had a good exam by the doctor," Francona said.
Francona didn't know if Schilling would do any throwing while the Red Sox are in San Diego for a weekend series.
"I need to get more information. He hasn't thrown yet. I don't know what the next couple of days will entail," Francona said.
The manager would not say who would take Schilling's spot on Tuesday in Seattle, although one possibility is Jon Lester, who is from Puyallup, Wash. Francona said he will announce the starter on Monday.
