Marlins give extensions to Beinfest, other front office executives

Larry Beinfest and several members of the Florida Marlins front office staff have received contract extensions from owner Jeffrey Loria that will run through the 2015 season.

Beinfest was promoted to president of baseball operations while Michael Hill was named general manager.

The Marlins also named Dan Jennings and Jim Fleming as assistant general managers, adding to their roles in the team's player personnel and development departments.

Loria said nothing will change "in the structure and day-to-day operations of the Marlins front office," but added that the promotions and extensions "are well-deserved."

"I am pleased that they have all agreed to remain with the Marlins until at least 2015 and maintain stability at the top of our organization as we work towards winning additional championships," Loria said.

Beinfest's previous contract with the Marlins had run through the 2010 season.

Beinfest and his front office group built a World Series champion in 2003, and have acquired shortstop Hanley Ramirez and second baseman Dan Uggla, among others, to complement the team's farm system and keep the Marlins competitive.

The Marlins are 70-90 this year and will finish with their worst record since 1999. But Beinfest has been forced to deal with severe payroll restrictions as the team continues to pursue a new stadium deal.

Florida's Opening Day payroll of $30.5 million this year ranked 29th in baseball. Only Tampa Bay's payroll was lower.
