After pulling a pair of trades on the same day last week, the Arizona Diamondbacks are settling in for the long haul and want manager Bob Melvin to be part of that stability.

Melvin and the D-backs have reached agreement on a three-year contract extension through the 2010 season, the East Valley Tribune and the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night.

"We have verbally agreed," the Tribune reported, citing a source with knowledge of the negotiations. "We have to get some things in writing."

An announcement is expected as early as Monday. Melvin was under contract for 2008; management picked up his 2009 option and added another guaranteed year for 2010, both newspapers reported.

Melvin was voted NL Manager of the Year after guiding Arizona to a 90-win season and the NL West title.

In two roster-reshaping deals Friday, Arizona acquired right-hander Dan Haren from Oakland and traded major league saves leader Jose Valverde to Houston. The swaps involved 12 players.

The Athletics also sent right-hander Connor Robertson to Arizona and received six players: left-handers Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland and Greg Smith; infielder Chris Carter; and outfielders Aaron Cunningham and Carlos Gonzalez.

The D-backs got reliever Chad Qualls, infielder Chris Burke and right-hander Juan Gutierrez from the Astros.

Haren, the AL starter in the All-Star Game this year, joins an Arizona rotation that includes 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb. Arizona also hopes to get Randy Johnson back from injury next year.

Haren, 27, won 43 games the past three seasons and has two years remaining on his contract with a club option for 2010 and cornerstone players like Webb, a Cy Young winner, and outfielder Eric Byrnes also are signed through 2010.

Melvin's club swept the Cubs in the NL Division Series before being swept by the Colorado Rockies the NL Championship Series.
