Braves' Jones, hitting .420, sidelined with quadriceps tear
ATLANTA -- Braves third baseman Chipper Jones was held out of Sunday's 6-3 loss to Philadelphia due to a small tear in his right quadriceps, and he said he may miss one or two more games.
The Braves are off Monday and begin a 10-game road trip at Chicago against the Cubs on Tuesday. Jones said he won't test the injury before Tuesday.
Jones' injury is only the latest this season for Atlanta. Another team leader, pitcher John Smoltz, said Wednesday he'll have season-ending shoulder surgery on Tuesday.
The Braves have been without closer Rafael Soriano most of the season. Top set-up reliever Peter Moylan went on the disabled list on April 12 to have season-ending elbow surgery. Center fielder Mark Kotsay has been out since May 26 with a back strain.
"Nothing surprises me in this clubhouse anymore," Jones said. "It's just another bad blow."
Jones, leading the majors with a .420 batting average, injured the muscle on April 9 in Colorado and felt more soreness as the Braves' road trip continued.
Jones had to leave a game on April 20 in Atlanta after irritating the injury, but started the next day.
"I won't do anything today or tomorrow," he said. "I'll see how it feels after the off day. ... I'll probably miss a day or two in Chicago."
Jones said Sunday he felt pain again in the area while running to first on a grounder in the seventh inning of Saturday night's 6-2 loss to Philadelphia.
Jones said team physician Dr. Marvin Royster could feel the tear and said there was some bleeding in the area. No MRI or X-ray was planned, Jones said.
"I can still swing the bat," he said.
Jones was 1-for-3 with his 15th homer, a two-run shot, in Saturday night's loss.
"Chipper's a difference-maker," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "You need him in the lineup. He can make a difference real quick."
Omar Infante was 1-for-3 as the starting third baseman Sunday.
Yunel Escobar, normally the leadoff hitter, was 2-for-5 in Jones' usual No. 3 spot in the batting order.
