The 35-year-old righty was 2-7 with a 6.97 ERA. Opponents hit .314 against him with 11 home runs in 60 2/3 innings.
Kansas City signed Tomko to a $3 million, one-year deal as a free agent in the offseason.
The last-place Royals called up Carlos Rosa, a 23-year-old right-hander, from Triple-A Omaha. He was a combined 6-3 with a 2.19 ERA in 13 starts with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha.
Tomko, an 11-year big-league veteran, made his last appearance for the Royals on Wednesday. He gave up three runs and five hits in one inning of Kansas City's 11-5 loss to Texas.
Tomko previously pitched for the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds.
